A Day Just Like Any Other Day

Friday (7-30-04):

Expectations:

Thursday had been tough at work, maybe today would be better?

It wouldn't, it would be worse because Thursday had been so bad.

6 people in the last week and a half quit at work, things will stablize.

Someone else will quit, i just hope it will be me.

Narrative:

My days usually start late in the day, two o'clock-ish. I don't remember much about Friday, except for work. Work was tough, I would later find out that i'd done about 1400 boxes spread through 4 trailers. Indy did as much in one. Friday blew. Tony chose to quit on Friday, after calling in on Thursday. He also left us several misloads. He knew he was quitting, bastard. Make that 7 in 1½ weeks. Randy, Ty, Don, Grant, Derrick, Joe, and Tony were all gone, and Andy had the day off, bastards. Will was the only new-hire left. He was picking the belt and i told the QA clerks to cut him some slack because it was his first time. Someone forgot to teach him how to check bags, so he didn't touch them at all. I didn't clock-out until 23:30. What a long night. Will needed a ride home, it was on my way. He directed me to University Commons. It's a nice place. There had been a shooting just across the 9 foot fence the night before. That's Urbana for you. Will and i talked on the way to his house. He'd had a DUI. His roommates wouldn't give him a ride to or from work. He might go to the company picnic on Saturday, if he could get a date. He was going to take some classes this Fall. He was looking to move, so he didn't have roomates anymore.

Conclusion:

Will was nice.

Work sucked more than i could imagine.

Someone else quit, yay.

Hello weekend.

Saturday (7-31-04):

Expectations:

Rachel will love the company picnic.

I will love the company picnic.

Ben will be odd.

Lynn will date Ben.

Narrative:

Ben and Rachel show up at a quarter until eleven. Ben's at the mall and Rachel and I are at the picnic by 11:05. The picnic is fun. Aaron and I are the only ones from my side. I suppose Will couldn't get a date. I play Frisbee. I swipe a game. Rachel and I fight. We all go home.

Conclusions:

Rachel loves the picnic.

I love the picnic.

Ben was odd.

Lynn...I don't know.

Sunday (8-1-04):

Expectations:

Eh.

Narrative:

Eh. Andy H. is in town. The Village is GREAT. It was a day just like any other day.

Conclusions:

Eh.

Watch The Village.

Monday (8-2-04):

Expectations:

Rachel and I will have fun in CU.

Work will suck.

Someone will quit, hopefully me.

Narrative:

Rachel brought me up from Charleston. We have fun in CU. She goes home early. Work sucks like it has since Thursday. Will doesn't show. Andy is still in Alabama. Nick quits. 8 people gone. 1 scheduled off. 1 just not there. Doesn't phase me. I expected this. Volume is heavy until 21:30 when the building dies and i'm told that it will be down for 20 mins. It seems that SS-2 burnt a motor. YAY! I rush to clean up my trailers. 20 minutes go by. Oops, the building will be down for the rest of the sort, but we'll still be paid until 23:00. YAY!!! Everyone works to clean up. I stay over to help the Midnight crew. I clockout at 3:00. Rachel is worried. It's all ok.

Conclusions:

Rachel had fun.

Work sucked because i did 1150 by 21:30.

Work didn't suck because there was no volume after 21:30.

Work sucked because i went home at 3:00.

Another person quit.

Tuesday (8-3-04):

Expectations:

Work will suck.

Someone will quit, hopefully me.

Narrative:

I got to work on-time. During the presort meeting, Freddy tells us the in 2 weeks, we've had 9 people leave. I did the math. Someone else quit. Freddy tells us that he was reading the paper and saw the face of Will Shiu in the obituaries. Will died on Sunday at 16:05 in his home at University Commons in Urbana. Cause of death was not in the obituary. My mind reels. I had taken him home on Friday. I was the last person at work to see him alive. My parting words were, "Don't quit. We need you there on Monday." He laughed. Damnit. He was 25. He was going to take some organic chemistry or molecular biology classes. His brother had told him that those were hard classes, but that he needed them. His mom had given him rides to and from work. He was looking for a girlfriend. He had 3 roommates. He was planning to move. Now he's gone. He joins the ranks of Randy, Ty, Derrick, Joe, Don, Grant, Tony, and Nick. He was just erased from the world and will be forgotten at work in a matter of days. I met him on Friday, he died on Sunday. He was just a blip on the radar? He was 25! What the fuck is wrong with the world!? Work was a dull ache. Volume was light. We got 2 new-hires. We got 3 people assigned to our side to fill the holes left by the 9.

Conlusions:

Life is transient.
